The Boston Sports Institute wins Award
H&A's Worcester Office Director, Kevin Provencher's design for the Boston Sports Institute, located in Wellesley, MA won Metallic Building Company’s 2019 Building of the Year award for the Community / Recreational category and the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA) Award of Excellence for the Educational and Recreation category. Each year, only seven buildings in the U.S. are selected by the MBCEA for exceptional design using metal building systems. This project has also been featured in multiple magazines and was recently the subject of a feature article in Metal Architecture. The project also received an honor award at the IFMA Boston Chapter 2020 FM Forward Conference as an outstanding example of energy efficient design.
The Boston Sports Institute is a 130,000 sq. ft. multi-use athletic facility. This facility is accessible to multiple schools in the surrounding community and includes two ice rinks, a synthetic turf field, track, two pools, a sports rehabilitation area, and a strength training space. Kevin notes the project was particularly challenging due to the complexities of designing athletic spaces for multiple environments. “Both ice rinks and natatoriums have high moisture loads, but the ice rinks’ temperature will be maintained at 55 F while the pools are at 82 F. The key decision to meet this challenge was to specify insulated metal wall panels (IMPs) for the exterior wall construction to meet the interior environmental requirements with a single exterior wall system.” To reach Kevin or any H&A team member call 781-871-9804.
